Two months of Proofs and Prompts: Forum, polls and moderation

The hosts of Proofs and Prompts

It has been two months since we started Proofs and Prompts. Once again thanks everyone for making it an active platform, we hope the conversations happening here will help build what mathematics will look like tomorrow.

We take advantage of this new post to announce two new features that we would like to launch:

  • We are launching a discussion space, using the Zulip platform, find an invite link here1. The goal is to provide a space where people can exchange thoughts and opinions at length on topics relevant to the blog, including AI use in research, formalization, teaching, supervision and publishing, either in the context of specific posts or more broadly. This forum can also be used for sharing the latest mathematical news, announcing projects or events, setting up a working group, discussing preprints (from the OpenAI batch, but just as much from anywhere else, including the LLM-generated preprints that individuals are now posting on their own), drafting an open letter, or carrying on a conversation that began in the comments. We’ve seen in the comments a number of people looking for help setting up groups, etc and we hope this added platform will help.
  • We want to launch another format for posts, more interactive, in the form of polls. Authors will be able to add polls to their posts according to two formats: the simplest ones to implement will be open to all (but vulnerable to bots), and there will also be polls where voters will need to register first (more barrier at entry, and rest assured that we will not know what you voted for).

Moreover, moderation (recently called “censorship” in a very kind email sent to us) is always a heated topic – in our case, some find it too firm and some find it too lax, and we are apparently biased both towards and against AI at the same time. We are calling upon the community for any comments, suggestions and ideas for improving our moderation policies (our comment policy covers comments, and our submission guidelines cover contributions).

We are also looking for a few volunteers who would like to help moderate comments, and to help run the new discussion space (welcoming newcomers, keeping it organised, helping working groups get started). If you are interested, write to us at proofsandprompts@gmail.com.

Thank you all for your incredible contributions to the blog!

  1. Finally! I had unsubscribed from this blog because I got tired of established mathematicians making this about “us versus them”....
