Updates from the AHM: guidelines on doctoral advising

AHM communications group

SERIES · As application deadlines approach, Proofs and Prompts is publishing a series of posts for people considering a PhD, doing a PhD or looking for a postdoc: guidelines, discussions and speculation about what to do and what careers in mathematics will look like. This post is one of them. Each is written independently and reflects only its authors’ views. All posts in the series

We are happy to announce that the Teaching Working Group of the Association for Human Mathematics wrote a set of recommendations on doctoral advising aimed at departments, advisors, and students. The document contains five guidelines centered on prioritizing human-authored writing, avoiding overreliance on AI, confronting the ethical concerns of AI use, and improving the wellbeing of students, as well as concrete proposals on how to implement them. We encourage everyone to read and share the document, and we especially look forward to feedback and suggestions.

I appreciate this announcement. I thank AHM for this one. It’s a lot better, more collaborative, and much less offensive than the previous AHM statement on OpenAI’s release.
